In honor of October’s Fire
Prevention Month program, the Abbeville Fire Department came to Westwood
Elementary for a demonstration. Chief
Neal Dickenson, Lt. Ben Loughner, Fire Fighter Blake Shultz, and Safety Officer
William “Smitty” Smith discussed fire safety procedures with the students. Fire Fighter Blake Shultz demonstrated how an
actual fire fighter would look and sound if he were to enter a burning house on
a rescue. Lt. Ben Loughner demonstrated
the power of the water as it shoots out of the deck gun on the pumper
truck. The students learned the
importance of how to call 911 in an emergency, not to be afraid of a fireman
when he comes to rescue, the importance of a having a meeting place outside the
home in case of an emergency, and how to stop, drop, and roll if clothes catch
on fire. We want to say Thank You for
Chief Dickenson’s visit and Thank You to all community helpers and emergency
response teams who make our lives safer!
